Devised by Yun Theatre Ensemble
In May 2025, Yun Theatre received an email from the National Endowment for the Arts: the $10,000 grant we had been awarded for a project called Home was being rescinded. The NEA was realigning its funding toward projects celebrating America's 250th anniversary. That week's meeting was very quiet. In Mandarin, 二百五, two hundred and fifty, means fool. Ridiculous. A little absurd. We find that fitting.
America 250 is a new devised work exploring what this anniversary means, and doesn't mean, for those of us who carry the story of migration. Drawn from historical research, oral history, and collective creation, it has no finished script: what you will see is a work still becoming. As celebrations fill every corner of this country, we want to pause and ask what exactly is being celebrated, and by whom. This July 4th, spend it with us.
The show will be in multi-lingual with English/Chinese subtitles.
